AI: Brussels launches "Raise," a virtual scientific institute

Pooling essential resources for the development of artificial intelligence and thus fostering breakthrough scientific innovation: this is the goal of Raise, the new virtual European institute launched by the EU Commission at the European Summit on AI in Science in Copenhagen. The initiative, part of the Apply AI strategy and the European Strategy for AI in Science, will be funded with €107 million from the Horizon Europe program . Raise – AI Science Resource in Europe – will pool and coordinate critical AI resources, including computing power, data, talent, and research funding across EU Member States and the private sector, to drive both the development of frontier AI and scientific progress. "In Europe," commented Commission Vice-President Henna Virkkunen, responsible for technological sovereignty, "we are stronger when we join forces to pursue a common goal. This spirit of collaboration is at the heart of the Raise initiative, in which leading scientists from across Europe combine different disciplines and perspectives to conduct excellent research on and with AI." Following the pilot phase launched today, the EU executive will work with Member States, the research community, and the private sector to further develop Raise within the framework of the next long-term EU budget and ensure its long-term sustainability, both in terms of governance and shared resources.
